Honeycrisp Apple
Honeycrisp, a modern apple variety introduced in the 1990s and sometimes trademarked as Honeycrunch, originated from the University of Minnesota's breeding program in the 1960s, aiming to develop cold-tolerant varieties for northern USA regions. Its parentage was initially thought to be Honeygold and Macoun, but DNA tests revealed Keepsake and MN1627 as parents, with Golden Delicious and Duchess of Oldenburg as grandparents of MN1627. Honeycrisp is medium-to-large, featuring a light green/yellow background mostly covered with a red-orange flush. The skin may have occasional russet dots, and the flesh is white, crisp, and not too dense, varying in colour. The flavour is sweet with minimal acidity, lacking depth but offering a refreshing, juicy experience. Occasionally, a trace of pear-drop flavour may be present. As the name suggests, Honeycrisp is genuinely crisp, though the soft crunch contrasts with the hard crispness of Golden Delicious. While flavour can vary, ranging from instantly refreshing to simply sweet and bland, Honeycrisp's availability in supermarkets has increased, making it a popular choice for those seeking a modern, cold-tolerant apple variety.
