The Plum Malling™ Elizabeth® is a cultivar of plum developed at the NIAB EMR East Malling Research Centre in East Malling, Kent. Its breeding involved crossing the Opal and Herman plum varieties. The name "Elizabeth" pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II and was released in conjunction with the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
This particular plum variety is renowned for its heavy crop production, resembling the Victoria plum but with an earlier harvest period, typically in early July. The fruits are sizable, firm, ovate-shaped, and display a striking red-purple coloration. They have an average weight of around 37 grams per fruit and offer a sweet taste. The juicy flesh inside is yellow-orange, providing a delightful eating experience.
During spring, the Plum Malling™ Elizabeth® showcases small, white flowers approximately one week before the Victoria variety, contributing to its unique growing cycle.
It's worth noting that as of my last update in January 2022, the European Union PBR (Plant Breeders' Rights) for this variety was pending under the reference number 20200654, and it was registered under UK 25/593.
