What you will receive:
Moss Balls , scientifically known as Aegagropila linnaei , are unique spherical algae colonies. Here are their key characteristics:
-
Type: They are a species of green algae that naturally form into dense, round shapes.
- Appearance: Moss Balls have a distinctive spherical shape, resembling a ball of moss. They are composed of fine, filamentous green algae.
- Size: They typically range from 2 to 12 centimeters (1 to 5 inches) in diameter, but can occasionally grow larger.
- Habitat: They are native to cold, alkaline lakes in Japan, Scotland, Iceland, and parts of Northern Europe.
- Maintenance: They are very low-maintenance and require minimal care. They do not need to be planted and can simply be placed in the aquarium.
- Benefits: Moss Balls are known to help improve water quality by absorbing nitrates, phosphates, and other pollutants. They also provide natural decoration and can serve as a refuge for small aquatic creatures.
- Light Requirements: They are adaptable to various light conditions and can thrive in low to moderate light.
- Water Conditions: They prefer cool water with a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5. They can tolerate a wide range of water parameters.
- Tank Compatibility: Moss Balls are compatible with most fish and invertebrates. They do not have any special compatibility requirements.
- Propagation: Unlike many plants, Moss Balls do not propagate by themselves. They grow very slowly, if at all.
-
Note: They are not true mosses, but a unique form of algae. While they are hardy and can tolerate different conditions, they may benefit from occasional gentle rolling or squeezing to maintain their shape and health.
