What you will receive:
Cryptocoryne balansae, commonly known as Balansae or Red Long Leaf Crypt, is a popular aquatic plant in the aquarium hobby. Here are its key characteristics:
- Size and Form : Cryptocoryne balansae is a relatively tall plant that can grow up to 30-50 centimeters (12-20 inches) in height. It features long, slender leaves with a distinct reddish-brown coloration.
- Leaves : The leaves are lance-shaped with slightly undulated edges. They have a dark green to reddish-brown coloration, depending on lighting and nutrient levels.
- Growth Pattern : It forms a rosette-like cluster of leaves that can spread outwards. It's well-suited for placement in the midground or background of an aquarium.
- Lighting : While it can tolerate lower light conditions, Cryptocoryne balansae benefits from moderate to high lighting. Higher light levels encourage more intense coloration.
- CO2 and Nutrients : It can grow well in aquariums without CO2 injection, but providing a balanced nutrient substrate or adding liquid fertilizers can promote healthy growth.
- Tank Conditions : It thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water conditions with a pH range of 6.5-7.5. The temperature should be kept between 22-28°C (72-82°F).
- Placement : It's commonly used as a background plant due to its height and bushy growth pattern. It provides good coverage for fish and can serve as a natural hiding spot.
- Maintenance : Cryptocoryne balansae is a relatively low-maintenance plant. Regular pruning of damaged or overgrown leaves can help maintain its aesthetic appeal.
- Compatibility : It is compatible with a wide range of fish and invertebrates. The dense growth of Cryptocoryne balansae provides shelter and breeding sites for small fish and invertebrates.
- Propagation : It can be propagated by dividing the healthy rhizome and replanting the individual portions in the substrate.
