Discovery, a popular early apple variety in English orchards, distinguishes itself with an extended shelf life of approximately a week, a rarity among early apple types. Accessible in late August and early September, Discovery's appeal lies in its freshness and novelty, reminiscent of Beaujolais Nouveau. While its flavour is somewhat shallow and notably acidic, lacking the depth of later season varieties, it provides a refreshing alternative to imported apples, especially when enjoyed slightly chilled. Sporting vibrant yellow-green colours with sun-induced dark red patches, Discovery holds commercial significance for UK growers and supermarkets, marking the start of the English apple season and promoting locally grown produce.
