Waldo Thornless Blackberry
The Waldo blackberry cultivar, introduced as the inaugural thornless, trailing blackberry for commercial planting, differs significantly from the Marion variety and hasn't displaced much of the Marion acreage due to its distinct flavor. This cultivar was selected in 1945 and presented in 1989, boasting a fully thornless plant structure.
The bushes of Waldo are characterized by their lack of vigor and compact nature. On average, the berries weigh approximately 6 grams, with yields averaging around 10 tons per hectare. This middle-ripening variety sees its initial fruits ripen at the start of July but lacks moderate tolerance to intense summer sun and heat.
Waldo blackberries present a black hue, though the taste and flavor of the berries can vary based on weather conditions and cultivation techniques employed.
